Several years ago, in an attempt to provide greater privacy protections for its citizens, the European Union (EU) perhaps unwittingly transformed the internet when it passed the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The GDPR was intended to protect the data privacy of European citizens, but given the global reach of the internet and the nearly 500 million citizens of the EU, the change meant to protect the EU has now impacted the internet worldwide. A significant unintended impact of the GDPR has been the mass redaction of previously public data used to identify and prosecute counterfeiters and other cybercriminals.
