A polymer shell with a core for personal care products
In the original publication, the patent’s title is a single word, “Encapsulates.”
Compare that to what you’ll find when perform a patent search using the Derwent World Patent Index: “Encapsulate useful in e.g. personal care composition…comprises shell comprising polymer and core…”
These titles, written by the Derwent editorial team, allow you to see at-a-glance what the patent includes. Additionally, more descriptive titles improve patent search outcomes – returning relevant documents that would have otherwise gone undetected!
The Toro Company
In this US grant, published on June 4, 2019, the patent is assigned to Exmark Mfg Co., with no indication that Exmark is part of The Toro Company. Exmark, however, was acquired by Toro in 1998.
If you were monitoring new grants from The Toro Company or analyzing patents in Toro’s portfolio, this patent would likely have gone undetected.
Clarivate applies a process of normalization algorithms and manual review to ensure company and inventor names are correct and consistent across its entire global patent data collection.

With provisional applications and continuations, knowing the status of any particular patent isn’t as easy as it seems.
In this case, the expiration date is calculated based on a term length of 20 years from January 24, 2001 (file date of patent US6594844B2), plus a term adjustment of 167 days.
Each DWPI record clearly shows an expiration date, which is adjusted to account for priority errors, as well as other factors – all clearly shown – removing any uncertainty about the current status of a particular patent.
