Therapies targeting vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) have been shown to improve visual acuity in DME patients. The anti-VEGF agents used in the treatment of DME are Lucentis and Eylea\u2014both approved for the treatment of DME\u2014and off-label Avastin. In addition to the anti-VEGF therapies, two long-acting intravitreal corticosteroid implants, Ozurdex and Iluvien, were approved in the United States in 2014 for the treatment of DME.
