It consists of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), depending on the location of the obstruction. Pharmacological treatment of patients diagnosed with VTE consists mainly of anticoagulant therapy and, in some severe cases, thrombolytics. Patients at high risk of VTE receive primary prophylaxis with anticoagulants. In recent years, new oral anticoagulants (NOACs) have become more widely used and have driven the growth of the VTE market.
