{"id":93924,"date":"2021-02-16T16:53:01","date_gmt":"2021-02-16T16:53:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/clarivate.com\/compumark\/?p=57245"},"modified":"2021-02-16T16:53:01","modified_gmt":"2021-02-16T16:53:01","slug":"brexit-impacts-to-your-trademark-searches-and-watches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/clarivate.com\/intellectual-property\/blog\/brexit-impacts-to-your-trademark-searches-and-watches\/","title":{"rendered":"Brexit impacts to your trademark Searches and Watches"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Updated: October 20, 2021<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On January 31, 2020, the United Kingdom withdrew from the European Union, an action commonly referred to as \u201cBrexit.\u201d From January 31 to December 31, 2020, a transition period was in place.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Understanding Brexit impacts to trademarks within the EUIPO and UKIPO<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Registered trademarks:<\/strong>Now that the transition period has expired,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/eu-trademark-protection-and-comparable-uk-trademarks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Union Trade Marks (EUTMs) will no longer protect trademarks in the United Kingdom<\/a>. Instead, the Intellectual Property Office of the United Kingdom (UKIPO) created \u201ccloned\u201d local copies of registered EUTMs, International Registrations designating the E.U., and Registered Community Designs onto the corresponding UKIPO registers. This cloning process was limited to trademarks registered prior to January 1, 2021.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pending applications:<\/strong>For pending applications, trademark owners were provided nine months \u2013 until September 30, 2021 \u2013 to apply to register trademarks with the UKIPO and retain the earlier filing date of the pending EUTM.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Trademark applications post-September 2021:<\/strong> Trademark applications will now need to be filed separately with both the EUIPO and UKIPO to ensure protection in both jurisdictions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Continuous coverage<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/clarivate.com\/compumark\/\">CompuMark<\/a>\u2122 trademark research and protection from Clarivate\u2122 empowers trademark professionals worldwide to create, expand and protect strong brands. Now, we are aligning our CompuMark Search and Watch products to reflect the UK\u2019s withdrawal from the EU.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning October 23, 2021, customers will experience jurisdictional coverage changes to SAEGIS, TM go365, and Full Search orders covering the UK and the EU.
