The rankings aimed to highlight the universities whose research is being harnessed most widely in commercial application, demonstrated by patents. Released this past August, the listings include six Australian universities. <a href=\"http:\/\/stateofinnovation.com\/spotlighting-asias-most-innovative-universities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learn more about the rankings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5868 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/clarivate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/ANZ-rankings.jpg\" alt=\"ANZ rankings\" width=\"420\" height=\"157\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the past few months, I\u2019ve had the opportunity along with the Regional Account Managers, Anthony Leal and Brian Syron, to meet with people at the different universities, and I want to share some of their success.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>University of Sydney <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s no surprise that Australia\u2019s oldest university is ranked as one of the most innovative, given its new addition last April of Australia\u2019s first purpose-build nanoscience facility. University of Sydney averaged a 31% patent-acceptance rate during the recent six years assessed by Clarivate Analytics for the ranking.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5869 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/clarivate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Sydney.png\" alt=\"Sydney\" width=\"606\" height=\"733\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Duncan Ivison &#8211; DVCR \u00a0and Jeroen Prinsen, Head of ANZ-SEA, Clarivate<\/em><em>\u00a0Analytics \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/em><\/h6>\n<p><strong>Monash University<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As Australia\u2019s largest university, with more than 120 research centres and institutes, it was no surprise to see Monash attain a high rank. From 2009 to 2014, Monash filed 138 patents, ultimately earning\u00a0 a 23.9% grant rate. I expect to see that number grow as Monash continues work on the Monash Vision System, a \u201cbionic eye\u201d that combines a brain implant with a miniature, wearable camera, promising the restoration of sight to up to 85% of the currently untreatable blind.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5870\" src=\"https:\/\/clarivate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Monash.png\" alt=\"Monash\" width=\"975\" height=\"549\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Professor Pauline Nestor, Vice Provost (Research), Monash and Jessica Turner, Global Head of Government and Academia, Clarivate<\/em><em>\u00a0Analytics<\/em><\/h6>\n<p><strong>University of Queensland<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If there was a ranking for longest-running science experiment, University of Queensland would take the lead with their <a href=\"http:\/\/smp.uq.edu.au\/content\/pitch-drop-experiment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018pitch drop experiment\u2019<\/a>, marking its 90th anniversary this year. But UQ\u2019s innovation certainly didn\u2019t stop there, as the research community truly lives by the school\u2019s motto, \u201cBy means of knowledge and hard work.\u201d For the recent six-year period surveyed for the ranking, this spirit is manifest in 192 filed patents, with 48 granted.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5871\" src=\"https:\/\/clarivate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Queensland.jpg\" alt=\"Queensland\" width=\"1310\" height=\"790\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Nicole Thompson, Director, Research Management and Strategy, and Ian Harris, Director, Research Partnerships<\/em><\/h6>\n<p><strong>University of Melbourne<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Home of the Bio21 Institute, University of Melbourne puts its money where it matters: research. An annual research expenditure of $850m led to 89 patents filed with a 28.1% grant rate. With works on Alzheimer\u2019s and Stem Cells Australia, there\u2019s little doubt Melbourne\u2019s research impact will continue to grow.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5872\" src=\"https:\/\/clarivate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Melbourne.png\" alt=\"Melbourne\" width=\"993\" height=\"843\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Julie Willis, Pro Vice-Chancellor \u00a0and Jeroen Prinsen, Head of ANZ-SEA, Clarivate<\/em><em>\u00a0Analytics<\/em><\/h6>\n<p><strong>University of New South Wales<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From its beginning, University of New South Wales has been focused on the scientific, technological and professional disciplines, an attribute which proves in its inclusion among the region\u2019s Top 75.
