The revised act introduces many changes to trademark law and practice including Canada\u2019s accession to the Madrid Protocol, which will allow Canadians to file Madrid applications with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wipo.int\/portal\/en\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World Intellectual Property Organization<\/a> (WIPO). In joining the Madrid Protocol, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ic.gc.ca\/eic\/site\/cipointernet-internetopic.nsf\/eng\/Home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canadian Intellectual Property Office<\/a> (CIPO) will also accept and examine applications filed by foreign Madrid applicants seeking Canadian registration.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the amended Trademarks Act brings into effect important <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osler.com\/en\/resources\/regulations\/2019\/major-changes-to-canadian-trademark-law-and-practice-coming-into-force-june-17-2019-are-you-ready\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">changes<\/a> to Canadian trademark applications and renewals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Elimination of the need to specify basis for filing or declarations of use<\/li>\n<li>Expanded \u201ctrademark\u201d definition to include non-traditional marks<\/li>\n<li>Implementation of Nice Classification system for all goods and services<\/li>\n<li>Increased government filing fees, renewal fees, and introduction of additional \u201cper class\u201d fees<\/li>\n<li>Shortened registration and renewal terms from 15 years to 10 years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Approach Canada\u2019s changing trademark law with confidence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At CompuMark, we know these changes impact your trademark research and protection strategy.
