Keeping up to date with the latest patents is a critical necessity for any technology related business.\u00a0 But scanning through the weekly alert is a major challenge. You need to filter out what is not relevant before you dive deeper into the patents of interest, but after a while the titles all look the same, making the filtering job very difficult.<\/p>\n
The problem comes from the rules for patents. In the US, Patent Regulation Code 37 CFR 1.72(a) states that patent titles “must be as short and specific as possible.” This may have worked for scanning patents by front page in the old days, but in the age where scanning patents in a list is the norm, those short titles just aren’t enough.\u00a0 Most of the titles and images do not provide enough information to make a fast decision for filtering which then leads to at least looking at the first claim or possibly other sections of the patent to be sure it should be moved out of the “Relevant” stack.<\/p>\n
