Announcing the Eugene Garfield Scholarship

A giant figure in the automated indexing and retrieval of information, Dr. Eugene Garfield pioneered the practice of citation analysis and infometrics, fostering the development of numerous citation databases. These include the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science, which indexes the contents and the interconnected citations in the world’s premier scientific and scholarly journals; and the Journal Citation Reports, which provides impact factors and other citation data specifying the influence of individual journals.

Dr. Garfield’s work touched innumerable lives, and not just of those who knew him. For one, the functionality of Google and Facebook directly descend from his concepts. There are also the multitudes that have benefited from his innovations, thanks to the treatments, cures and inventions that were accelerated by researchers who used his citation-indexing tools to turn their work in the right direction at the right time, realizing connections they otherwise might have missed.

To honor his legacy and to support the scientometrics community that he played a key role in establishing, Clarivate Analytics is creating the “Eugene Garfield Information Sciences Pioneer Award” to be given annually to one promising information scientist selected by a board of five external experts.

In the coming weeks we will be releasing more details on the scholarship and later this year, we will bring together the scientometrics community to honor Dr. Garfield’s legacy and to announce the recipient of our first award. If you would like to receive further information about either the scholarship and/or event, please email danielle.connelly@clarivate.com.
