Clarivate Analytics makes significant Web of Science investment with expansion of Emerging Sources Citation Index

Index expansion enhances discoverability of scholarly research by building on a unique and unsurpassed collection of journals topping 35,000

PHILADELPHIA, April 3, 2017 – In a world where research data is booming, at the same time as science is rapidly changing, the research community is clamoring for access to reveal meaningful connections between past and current research, between collaborators, between funding and research impact. To make these hidden connections it all needs to start with the right data.

Committed to investing in its industry-leading products, Clarivate Analytics announced it is addressing this need in the research community with the expansion of its Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) from 5,000 journal titles to over 7,500 as well as the release of a 10-year archive for this index later this year. The index expansion will increase the breadth of research within the Web of Science to 35,000 journals and offer access to an unparalleled collection of its kind.

Housed within the Web of Science™ – the premier web-based platform for scientific research and discovery and the authority in science, social science and arts and humanities indices – the Emerging Sources Citation Index includes high-quality, peer-reviewed publications representing both regional importance and emerging scientific fields not well-covered in more established journals.

The ESCI archive provides comprehensive discovery of new areas of research, deepens regional and domain coverage and enables expanded research assessment by adding 1,633 new publishers to the Web of Science Core Collection and 23 new countries. With access to historical content dating back to 2005, researchers can better identify potential research groups to collaborate with and also pinpoint their H-index, an author-level metric that measures productivity and publication citation impact. In addition institutions can access a more complete view of its impact vs. that of peers, and research funders can establish a more comprehensive understanding of research return on investment.

Launched in 2015, this new index was built in partnership with global and regional experts to capture journal content important to their regions and their research domains. The Web of Science editorial team, using its well established and exacting journal selection criteria conduct a streamlined editorial process for inclusion in ESCI.  Journals in ESCI are further eligible for a comprehensive follow-on evaluation for coverage in the Science Citation Index Expanded®, Social Sciences Citation Index® and Arts & Humanities Citation Index, which have rigorous evaluation processes and selection criteria.  The Web of Science editorial team monitor all journals in the Web of Science to ensure quality standards continue to be met.

“Based largely on feedback from our partners and clients, we have made a significant investment to the Web of Science by actively expanding our content via the Emerging Science Citation Index,” said Jessica Turner, global head of scientific and academic research at Clarivate Analytics. “The world of research is vast and varied. Researchers need a reliable tool that enables them to measure the contributions of research in their disciplines and identify collaborative opportunities as efficiently as possible. The addition of these journals will enhance those capabilities even further.”
