The 2017 CWTS Leiden Ranking exclusively uses Web of Science data from Clarivate Analytics

PHILADELPHIA, May 19, 2017 – Released on Wednesday, the CWTS Leiden Ranking 2017 shares insights into the scientific performance of over 900 worldwide universities from 54 different countries. The ranking looks at all universities worldwide with more than 1,000 fractionally counted Web of Science indexed core publications between 2012–2015.

The ranking provides statistics on the scientific impact of universities and their involvement in scientific collaboration, and is based exclusively on bibliographic data from the Web of Science database of Clarivate Analytics, an independent company focused on enabling research excellence and driving real-world outcomes.

Many universities pay attention to these and other rankings as part of their decision-making processes. And, while they can be considered controversial, once rankings are published, many universities share their place in the list as a way to promote their institution.
