Derwent Innovation coverage of German patents extended back to 1877

Germany is an important industrialised market with a long history of innovation and a well-established patent system that underlies its prosperity. It is the largest economy in Europe ahead of France and the UK, and the fourth largest in the world by nominal GDP. It is also the largest manufacturing economy in Europe with 29.1% of GDP coming from industry.

Germany also invests a larger proportion of GDP in gross expenditure on R&D (GERD) at 2.93% in 2016, compared to France at 2.38% and the UK at just 1.69%.

A look at recent patent activity shows also that inventions originating in Germany outnumber those from both France and the UK by on average 3.8 and 5 times respectively over the last ten years:

During the same period, the top 10 companies by volume of patent families originating in Germany are largely from the automotive sector:

Germany then is a wealth of technical innovation driven by some of the longest established global companies; Siemens, for example, was founded in 1847 and Daimler was one of the earliest automotive companies starting in 1890.

But until now, comprehensive and complete patent information for this market had only been available in Derwent Innovation back to the middle of the 20th century with full text coverage of German granted patents running from 1968 to date, bibliographic and first claim coverage of applications from 1968 expanded to full text from 1987 to date, and full text of utility models from 1983 to date.

From today forward, as part of a systematic program to enhance the global collections within Derwent Innovation, full text German patent information has been expanded in coverage and extended in time.

Derwent Innovation now offers extended German full-text data coverage with the addition of new original language information from 1877 to 1968 and enhancements to existing coverage from 1969 to 1986. We have deepened our prior art backfile for German patent applications, granted patents, and utility models, which includes bibliographic data, abstracts for applications, description and claims.

  • Granted Patents: Originally 1968 to date, coverage has now been extended back to 1877 with the addition of 1.4 million records.
  • Patent Applications: Originally bibliographic and first claim coverage from 1968 and full text from 1987 to date, full text coverage now has now been extended back to 1964 with the addition of 550 records, and coverage from 1968 to 1987 expanded to include full text with the update of 2 million records.
  • Utility Models: Originally 1983 to date, full text coverage has now been extended back to 1934 with the addition of 550,000 records.

Our goal is to provide the most comprehensive and trusted data for more accurate analysis, so we increased our prior art backfile from 4.2 million records to 6.1 million records. Now customers will have automatic access to review and analyze the additional technical content found in over 1 million German patents, more than 600,000 utility models and applications with the coverage we added prior to 1969, as well as content enhancements we made to over half of the existing 4.2 million backfile records.
