To better understand the key players and the emerging, evolving trends in innovation, we looked across the South and Southeast Asia landscape in our latest report.

Measuring innovation

For this report on innovation in South and Southeast Asia, we analyzed patents filed from 2015 to 2019 by organizations headquartered in this region. Our final list of 276 innovative organizations is based in eight countries. These include India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam. Government and academic research institutions and corporate businesses were all included.

We conducted this research using editorially enhanced, authoritative and accurate patent data from Derwent World Patents Index™ (DWPI™) and Derwent Patents Citation Index™. Innovation was tracked based on four indicators:

  • Volume
  • Success
  • Globalization
  • Influence

The countries in South and Southeast Asia have different engines of growth, each with its own focus and area of expertise. This diversity has helped to lay the foundation for fresh perspectives and processes, which in turn has fostered resilience and strength in uncertain times.

Key findings from our report
  • Top innovators in South and Southeast Asia: India tops the list with the most innovators from government research institutions, academic institutions and corporations segment.
  • Innovation in numbers: more research grants are made available to academic and research institutions to address relevant societal problems such as climate change.
  • Constructive dialogue between policymakers and industry players is key. A collaborative strategy in the ecosystem to achieve a shared objective is fundamental to ensuring success in innovation.
  • Sustainability continues to gain more traction: the speed at which companies integrate sustainability into their business model is crucial to create a competitive advantage over its competition.
