Reflecting on a Webinar That Sparked Ideas<\/strong><\/p>\n

What started as a deep dive into Leganto\u2019s capabilities turned into a conversation that revealed just how impactful collaboration, creativity, and shared purpose can be across academic institutions. \u201cUnlock Your Library Impact with Leganto\u201d, a recent session hosted by Ex Libris, was a compelling exchange of ideas, and a reminder of how collaborative and forward-thinking the academic library community truly is.<\/p>\n

Led by Jessie Ransom, Director of Product for Leganto, the webinar served as a platform to explore the practical value of Leganto. It was a real and impactful conversation between two passionate academic librarians about how a reading list solution became a catalyst for transformation in their institutions. What became evident was the strong connection running through the dialogue: the joy of discovery, the pride of innovation, and the satisfaction of finally bridging long-standing gaps between the library and the classroom. The conversation brought together Kristine Shrauger, Department Head, Document Delivery & Resource Sharing, University of Central Florida<\/strong> and Melissa Gomis, Chair, Collections Strategy & Open Scolarship, University of Nebraska-Lincoln<\/strong>. Two different institutions, both using Leganto in ways that reflect their unique cultures.<\/p>\n

Kristine Shrauger described how her team embraced Leganto not just as a product, but as a philosophy. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to connect the library to the classroom,\u201d she said, \u201cto save students money and make course materials accessible.\u201d<\/p>\n

She spoke with clarity and purpose: \u201cWe hired a Leganto librarian, but I call him the Lego librarian,\u201d she noted humorously, \u201cbecause he helps us build connections like blocks between the library and the classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa Gomis added her perspective from the University of Nebraska: \u201cThere\u2019s a push to support first generation students and ensure they graduate on time. Leganto helps us support students with easier access to materials.\u201d<\/p>\n

A particularly insightful point was how both librarians expanded their thinking on what belongs in a reading list as they began to focus on the student and faculty perspective, rather than the library perspective. Initially focused on ebooks, Kristine\u2019s team soon added YouTube links, website articles, even anatomical models for large anatomy classes. \u201cWe put the anatomy body parts into the Leganto pages,\u201d she shared, \u201cso students could access everything right from Canvas.\u201d<\/p>\n

This flexibility and comprehensiveness, combined with Leganto\u2019s seamless integration with LMS platforms like Canvas, transformed their workflows and encouraged deeper faculty collaboration.<\/p>\n

Enter the Syllabus Assistant: AI with Purpose<\/strong><\/p>\n

A key highlight was the introduction of the Leganto Syllabus Assistant, an AI-powered tool that simplifies how instructors build reading lists. Upload a syllabus and it automatically extracts and links to relevant content in the library\u2019s collection. Currently, Leganto AI Syllabus Assistant is available for librarians, with instructor-facing access expected in September.<\/p>\n

Our guests shared how they\u2019re already using the tool in meaningful ways. Kristine Shrauger explained, \u201cWe\u2019re testing the AI syllabus assistant [\u2026] to get more access and more reading lists going, even without faculty realizing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa Gomis also described its value in streamlining support: \u201cWe were asking instructors to send us their syllabi, and we used that to create lists for them. It helped us quickly identify low-cost options and purchase what was missing.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added that this process often opened new conversations with faculty, from requests for book chapters to questions about licensing specific materials. Having full access to the syllabus data made it easier for the library to know what to buy. As Melissa said, \u201cIt helped us quickly identify low-cost options and purchase what was missing.\u201d She also shared that they used affordability statistics to make a case for acquiring additional resources. This kind of insight not only supports better collection decisions, but also reinforces the library\u2019s value in broader institutional budgeting discussions.<\/p>\n

The potential of the newly released syllabus assistant to reduce friction and embed the library more deeply in academic workflows was already apparent.<\/p>\n

One of the most powerful takeaways from the webinar was the human connection behind Leganto\u2019s success. Both speakers emphasized that meaningful adoption wasn\u2019t driven by technology alone, it was rooted in collaboration. \u201cI picked up the phone and reached out to peer institutions to show me what they were doing,\u201d Kristine shared. \u201cThat\u2019s how we learned, through community.\u201d<\/p>\n
