In this blog, part of a new series highlighting the contributions from Ukraine to global research, we analyze the growth and diversity of subject areas in Ukraine. We also look at Ukraine\u2019s contribution to global Research Fronts\u2122, which form when clusters of Highly Cited Papers\u2122 are frequently cited together.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In recent years, Ukraine has developed a reputation as an international information technology (IT) hub. Its IT sector has seen tremendous growth with many international companies expanding into Ukraine, including Microsoft, Google, Oracle and Samsung who opened R&amp;D facilities in Kyiv. According to <em>Forbes<\/em> magazine, the current aggressions from Russia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/peterbendorsamuel\/2022\/02\/25\/ukraine-russia-war-impact-on-engineering-and-it-services-availability\/?sh=32561c8565d2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have disrupted services<\/a> from 70,000 &#8211; 100,000 highly qualified workers, including many with digital engineering and IT skills.<\/p>\n<p>As an emerging nation, and even though it is one of the poorest nations in Europe by <a href=\"https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/country-rankings\/poorest-countries-in-europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gross Domestic Product per capita<\/a>, Ukraine has invested in its scientific endeavors. It has a USD $571M <a href=\"http:\/\/uis.unesco.org\/en\/country\/ua?theme=science-technology-and-innovation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gross Domestic Expenditure on R&amp;D<\/a> and has seen advancement in several fields including computer science, physics, chemistry, engineering and more.<\/p>\n<p>Infused by international investments, Ukraine saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/ukraine-energy-profile\/sustainable-development\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">significant advancements in its renewable energy<\/a> with total investments amounting to $3.99 billion. In 2021, the World Bank approved $200 million to support the Ukrainian Higher Education system via the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/ukraine-energy-profile\/sustainable-development\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukraine Improving Higher Education for Results Project<\/a>, and in 2020, Ukraine climbed five places in the World Bank\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/IC.BUS.EASE.XQ?locations=UA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ease of Doing Business<\/a> ratings.<\/p>\n<p>We cover this topic below and in our Ideas to Innovation podcast. <a href=\"https:\/\/clarivate.com\/podcasts\/ideas-to-innovation-season-two\/the-impact-of-russias-invasion-of-ukraine-on-global-scientific-research\/\">Listen here for more<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"btn btn-outline-primary\" href=\"https:\/\/clarivate.com\/podcasts\/ideas-to-innovation-season-two\/the-impact-of-russias-invasion-of-ukraine-on-global-scientific-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">View podcast<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Scientific innovation in Ukraine, by the numbers<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Increased investments in Ukraine\u2019s science, technology and education can also be seen through the scientific publishing lens.<\/p>\n<p>Using <a href=\"https:\/\/clarivate.com\/webofsciencegroup\/solutions\/incites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">InCites Benchmarking and Analytics<\/a>\u2122, we first looked at Ukraine\u2019s overall scientific output on macro, meso and micro levels.\u00a0 As can be seen from Figure 1, between 2017-2021, Ukraine\u2019s research output focused on macro topics such as physics (19%), clinical and life sciences (16%), chemistry (16%), social sciences (12%), engineering and material sciences (10%), and electrical engineering (10%) with a total of 52,618 papers published.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Figure 1: Macro level topics 2017-2021 publications<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-181887 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/clarivate.com\/academia-government\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/04\/Screen-Shot-2022-04-21-at-12.40.32-PM-1024x468.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/clarivate.com\/academia-government\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/04\/Screen-Shot-2022-04-21-at-12.40.32-PM-1024x468.png 1024w, https:\/\/clarivate.com\/academia-government\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/04\/Screen-Shot-2022-04-21-at-12.40.32-PM-300x137.png 300w, https:\/\/clarivate.com\/academia-government\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/04\/Screen-Shot-2022-04-21-at-12.40.32-PM-768x351.png 768w, https:\/\/clarivate.com\/academia-government\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/04\/Screen-Shot-2022-04-21-at-12.40.32-PM-87x40.png 87w, https:\/\/clarivate.com\/academia-government\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/04\/Screen-Shot-2022-04-21-at-12.40.32-PM.png 1104w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Source: <\/strong>InCites\u2122<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On a meso level, in physics, we see publications in areas of particles and fields and superconductor; The RHIC is located at Brookhaven laboratory in the United States used by an international team of researchers.<\/p>\n<p>The Plasma Nitriding process, another focus of Ukrainian research papers in physics, is used to increase wear resistance, surface hardness and fatigue by creating a hard layer including compressive stresses. A Research Front is a group of highly cited papers in a specialized topic defined by cluster analysis, which you can read more about <a href=\"https:\/\/clarivate.com\/blog\/new-findings-on-171-hot-and-emerging-research-fronts\/\">here<\/a>. In short, Research Fronts demonstrate topical, promising and emerging research areas, and themselves can become an object of study.<\/p>\n<p>We retrieved Ukraine\u2019s publications from 2017 and mapped them to the Research Fronts\u2122 citations topics. Our analysis shows that Ukrainian research is contributing to several key Research Fronts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Computer science and artificial intelligence<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In the computer science and artificial intelligence category, we tracked 251 papers led by Ukrainian researchers. This may be the result of the country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/blogs\/ukrainealert\/ukraines-roadmap-to-an-artificial-intelligence-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">substantial investment in artificial intelligence in 2020<\/a>\u00a0given Ukraine had the largest number of AI companies in Eastern Europe at the time\u2014alongside the success of billion-dollar Ukrainian startups such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grammarly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grammarly<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/about.gitlab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GitLab<\/a>. These articles were published by leading institutions across the country including The Ministry of Education Science of Ukraine, LVIV Polytech National University and The National Academy of Sciences to name just a few. Figure 4 demonstrates the steady increase in Ukraine\u2019s artificial intelligence related papers since 2017. According to market research, Ukraine\u2019s electric car market has shown <a href=\"https:\/\/ukraineinvest.gov.ua\/news\/electric-cars-market-growth-how-ukraine-can-benefit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">significant growth in recent years<\/a>. Between 2018 and 2020, the number of electric cars grew by 375% and research has responded to that market growth since 2017. We analyzed the titles and abstracts of these documents and revealed an array of topics within this research area. Figure 6 is a word cloud of the most frequent words that occur in the abstracts and titles. In the past decade, the country has seen tremendous growth in domestic and foreign investments in research and development. From computer science and IT to education, alternative energy and more, it is the preferred destination for many investors. Such investment has enabled Ukraine to develop the <span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange TrackChangeHoverSelectColorPurple SCXW248483304 BCX0\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW248483304 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun TrackChangeHoverSelectHighlightPurple SCXW248483304 BCX0\">infrastructure <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange TrackChangeHoverSelectColorPurple SCXW248483304 BCX0\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW248483304 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun TrackChangeHoverSelectHighlightPurple SCXW248483304 BCX0\">needed<\/span><\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange TrackChangeHoverSelectColorPurple SCXW248483304 BCX0\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW248483304 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun TrackChangeHoverSelectHighlightPurple SCXW248483304 BCX0\">for sustainable, efficient technologies and processes. Ukraine\u2019s contribution to COVID-19 research is also significant, with research spanning across medicine, social sciences and education. Unfortunately but unsurprisingly, the continued aggressions from Russia have sadly halted this progress with a low number of papers published in 2022.<\/p>\n<p><em>Clarivate has recently launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/clarivate.com\/resources\/\">resource center<\/a><\/em><em>\u00a0that provides a package of software tools, information and insights for displaced researchers in Ukraine.
