The annual U.S. News & World Report rankings for global universities are b<\/em>ased on\u00a0<\/em>Web of Science<\/em><\/a>\u2122 data and\u00a0InCites<\/a><\/u>\u2122 metrics provided by Clarivate<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

University rankings may be controversial, but they have unquestionably become a standard and familiar feature of the annual higher education calendar.\u00a0Originally intended as a general and accessible source of information, particularly for those outside the groves of academe, they are one perspective on an institution\u2019s standing compared to its peers.<\/p>\n

In this form they have grown to be a frequent reference point for institutional comparisons made by students, faculty, researchers, research offices, national governments and funding bodies.\u00a0And, despite their necessarily selective field of view, they\u00a0are increasingly employed as a source of management information and help guide evaluation and planning decisions.<\/p>\n

The critical feature of any ranking system is that it should draw on the best available and most accurate information in its analysis.\u00a0We are\u00a0therefore\u00a0pleased to see this year\u2019s\u00a0release\u00a0of the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0News\u00a0Best Global Universities\u00a0Rankings<\/a>, powered by Clarivate\u00a0data. The list\u00a0encompasses 1,750 top\u00a0institutions and is\u00a0spread across more than 90 countries.<\/p>\n

To create the\u00a0ranking,\u00a0U.S. News\u00a0looked to both reputation and bibliometric indicators.\u00a0Web of Science<\/a>\u2122 data and\u00a0InCites<\/a>\u2122\u00a0indicators weigh factors that measure a university\u2019s global and regional research reputation and academic research performance.<\/p>\n

For the overall rankings, this includes bibliometric indicators such as publications, citations and international collaboration, and reputation indicators gathered from the results of our annual Academic Reputation Survey.<\/p>\n

Reputation\u00a0indicators<\/h3>\n

Results from\u00a0our\u00a0annual academic reputation survey<\/a>\u00a0for the most recent five years\u00a0(2017-2021)\u00a0were used to create the reputation indicators used in\u00a0the\u00a0analysis.<\/p>\n

Each year,\u00a0Clarivate polls academics around the world\u00a0to ask which\u00a0universities and research institutions\u00a0they consider to be the strongest\u00a0in their discipline.\u00a0The survey creates\u00a0a comprehensive snapshot of academics\u2019\u00a0opinions about world universities and asks\u00a0respondents to give their views of programs in the disciplines with which they were familiar. This\u00a0allows them\u00a0to rate universities at the field and department level, rather than at the institution level, creating a more specific and accurate measurement of a university\u2019s\u00a0reputation.<\/p>\n

Survey participation is by invitation only to prevent manipulation of the results and participants are carefully selected by geographical location and discipline for statistically relevant sampling.\u00a0The survey is offered in\u00a0seven\u00a0languages to overcome language bias.<\/p>\n

In previous surveys, participants were from approximately 150 countries with around 90 percent academic faculty or researchers.<\/p>\n

Bibliometric indicators<\/h3>\n

These indicators draw on data from the\u00a0Web of Science<\/a>\u2122 for the five-year period from 2015 to 2019. The Web of Science is a web-based research platform that covers more than 21,000 of the most influential and authoritative scholarly journals worldwide in the sciences, social sciences, and arts and humanities.<\/p>\n

Publication data\u00a0is used to\u00a0measure the overall research productivity of a university, based on the total number of scholarly papers \u2013 articles and reviews \u2013 that contain affiliations to a university and are published in high-quality, impactful journals.<\/p>\n

The total number of citations per paper represents the overall impact of the\u00a0university\u2019s\u00a0research and is independent of the university’s size or age. The value is normalized to overcome differences in research area, the paper’s publication year and\u00a0document\u00a0type.<\/p>\n

A normalized citation index\u00a0is considered one of the core measures of research performance and is used by various research evaluation bodies globally.<\/p>\n

We\u00a0recommend the inclusion of\u00a0ranking indictors\u00a0as a part of\u00a0proper and responsible data analysis with multiple, complimentary dimensions.<\/p>\n
