Rice University on Converis at AIR Forum 2016

At the recent AIR Forum (Association for Institutional Research) held in New Orleans, professionals in institutional research gathered to exchange ideas and hear sessions on topics ranging from faculty activity reporting to university rankings and data governance.

I had the pleasure of introducing a customer case study on Converis.  Celeste Boudreaux, Assistant Vice Provost for Academic Affairs of Rice University, highlighted their decision-making process to replace their existing in-house faculty information system, as they were looking for a solution that was configurable enough to meet their needs. Their existing systems that held various kinds of research data, from people to patents, publications and grants, were not able to communicate with one another and exchange information. Their old system was dismissed by faculty as “clunky, time-wasting, and pointless.”

When considering the transition to an efficient system, Rice University was looking to make significant changes in faculty activity reporting, integrating data from other systems into one central location, and a workflow to deposit publications into their institutional repository. After evaluating multiple systems, Rice University chose Converis over competitors because of the features, configurability, and control through roles and rights, as well as the ability to store information relating to non-STEM fields. For more information, see Rice’s website: http://vpaa.rice.edu/home.

Their decision to implement an enterprise system like Converis involved a number of stakeholders. In addition to a project team and the executive sponsors, Rice included a steering committee and advisory group to help drive the decision process. Pilot testing with two departments was instrumental in helping to drive configuration changes, allowing Rice to tailor Converis to fit their specific needs. After the rollout to the entire university, Rice plans to complete their faculty annual reviews through Converis in 2016.
