IP & Science hosts the 2016 Executive Roundtable with Research Administrators in Bangkok
With the theme of “Promoting Research Performance, Greater Collaboration and Innovation” this year, IP & Science ASEAN and North Asia hosted its second Executive Roundtable in Asia on August 26.
The roundtable was attended by a good mix of universities across Asia. A total of 12 participants from Thailand, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore, represented 12 universities. Each facilitator introduced the discussion topic, and invited other participants to comment and share their views. There was plenty of good exchange of perspectives for each topic. The three topics were:
- There is so much talk about partnership between academia and industry – the ideal combination of new discovery and emerging frontiers of knowledge with funding and technology know-how to transform ideas into practical realities. But how do we go about creating and maintaining a win-win partnership between academia and industry?
- Talent is the lifeblood of any university and institution. But with limited resources and funding, how do we identify, attract and retain talent to ensure a healthy succession and continued education and knowledge transfer from one generation to the next?
- What policies should a university and institution put in place to nurture, drive and promote innovation within its culture, while fulfilling its vision and mission of higher education?
Continuing our focus on ASEAN, we are pleased to launch the latest report from our IP & Science business about ASEAN as the emerging research and innovation hub. This report, the latest in a series focusing on groups of nations, aims to provide an overview and analysis of the ASEAN countries’ research focus and impact in research and innovation based on scientific publication and patenting activity as indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection, Derwent World Patents Index® and Derwent Patents Citation Index®.
Professor Park Seong Jin, Vice-President of Industry-Academic Affairs, Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), was specially invited as a guest speaker to share with us his university’s success case study of ensuring successful collaboration with industry partners. POSTECH was also named by IP&Science in 2012 as one of the world’s top 100 most innovative organizations, and had the distinction of being one of the only two university recipients to make it to the list.
The event was a great success judging from the lively and candid discussion between the participants and facilitators. The participants found the discussion very insightful and looked forward to longer and more frequent networking sessions with their regional counterparts.
